Stump Grinding in Baldwin & Mobile County, AL

Stump Grinding · Baldwin & Mobile County, AL

Get the Stumps Out of Your Yard and Your Plans

Every cleared lot and every storm season on this coast leaves stumps behind, and they sit there for decades if nobody deals with them — mower hazards, termite harbors, and dead spots in an otherwise clean yard. We take stumps out across Baldwin and Mobile County two ways, and the right one depends on what the ground is for.

For yards, pastures, and cleared lots, we grind stumps down with the forestry mulcher head — the stump comes off at or just below grade and the grindings stay as ground cover you can seed over. For ground that is getting built on, ground-level grinding is not enough: a foundation or slab needs the root ball gone. That is excavation work — we dig the stump out whole, backfill the hole, and compact it so the pad does not settle later.

Either way you get a straight answer at the estimate about which method your project needs and what it costs, not a one-size answer shaped by whatever machine is on the trailer.

Grinding for Yards, Grubbing for Foundations

Grinding is the fast, economical path: the stump gets cut down to grade, the surface roots stay put and rot in place, and the spot disappears under grass within a season. In the regional market, single-stump grinding typically runs $100 to $400 depending on diameter, with each additional stump on the same visit costing much less — which is why doing the whole yard at once is the smart money.

Grubbing is the construction path. When a slab, driveway, or foundation is going over the spot, the root ball has to come out entirely or the ground settles as it rots and cracks whatever sits on top. We dig it with the excavator, haul or bury the debris per your preference and local rules, then backfill and compact in lifts so the pad holds. If your stumps are part of a bigger clearing job, grubbing folds into the land clearing scope.

Pine Country Stumps

South Alabama stumps are mostly pine, and pine is the friendlier case — softer wood that grinds fast and rots faster than hardwood. Live oak and other hardwoods take longer under the head and price accordingly. Diameter is the other driver: a knee-high loblolly stump is a few minutes of work, while a mature oak stump is a committed grind.

After hurricanes and hard blows, we also handle the stumps and root plates storm-felled trees leave behind — including the tipped-up root balls that come with a tree that went over whole. Those are dig-and-haul jobs, and we run them as part of storm cleanup across both counties.

How We Work

What Working With EMCO Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

Walk the Property & Free Estimate

We come out, look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure and no phone-quote guessing.

2

Schedule & Prep

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where debris goes, and account for drainage and any lines or wetlands to protect. You know the plan before anything starts moving.

3

The Work

Our own crew runs our own iron — mulchers, excavators, and dozers — and we keep the site clean and keep you posted. Decades of experience means we read the ground and adjust instead of tearing it up.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, haul off or mulch whatever the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and ready for whatever you are building next.

How much does stump grinding cost around Baldwin and Mobile County?
Market pricing generally runs $2 to $6 per inch of stump diameter — most single stumps land between $100 and $400, with a minimum charge for the trip. Additional stumps on the same visit price far cheaper than the first, so batch them. Grub-outs for construction price by the job since digging, backfill, and compaction are included.
Is grinding enough if I am going to build over the spot?
No. Grinding removes the visible stump but leaves the root system, and rotting roots settle. Anything structural — slab, foundation, driveway — needs the root ball grubbed out, the hole backfilled, and the fill compacted. We do both and will tell you which your project needs.
What happens to the grindings and debris?
Grindings can stay as ground cover in the hole and around the spot, or we haul them off if you want the area clean and seed-ready. Grubbed root balls get hauled or buried on-site where rules and your preference allow. We settle it at the estimate so there are no surprises.
Can you take out one stump, or is there a minimum?
We take single-stump jobs with a trip minimum, same as the rest of the market. If you have several, the per-stump price drops fast after the first one — the expensive part is getting the equipment there, not the extra twenty minutes of grinding.
Do you clear storm-felled trees and their root balls?
Yes. Storm work is part of what we do across both counties — downed trees cut and hauled, and the tipped-up root plates dug, removed, and the holes filled so the yard is safe and mowable again.
