Bush hogging is how South Alabama ground stays usable. A season or two of Gulf Coast sun and rain will stand a field up in waist-high grass, briars, and volunteer pines, and the longer it goes, the more it costs to take back. Most bush hogging in our area prices by the acre for open ground and by the hour where obstacles slow the work. Market rates generally run in the range of $75 to $250 an acre depending on how thick the growth is and how long it has been since the last cut, with small jobs carrying a minimum to cover hauling the equipment out. A field cut every year sits at the bottom of that range; ground on its third or fourth summer of neglect prices toward the top because it takes slower passes and more of them.
What moves the number is simple to see from the seat: stem thickness, hidden obstacles like stumps and washouts, wet spots that bog the tractor, and slopes that force slower travel. We walk the ground first, flag what will slow us down, and quote it before the machine comes off the trailer.
A rotary cutter handles grass, weeds, briars, and light brush up to about thumb thickness. Once ground has stood up in saplings and woody brush much past that, forcing a bush hog through it beats up the equipment and leaves a rough, chewed result. That is forestry mulching work — the mulcher grinds standing brush and small trees into a clean mulch layer in one pass.
