Excavation is precise work, and it's a lot of what we do. EMCO Builders digs foundations and footings, trenches for water, power, and septic, culverts and ditches to move drainage, and ponds across Baldwin County, Mobile County and across South Alabama. Everything gets dug to the right line and grade, backfilled and compacted the right way, and hauled off clean. Thirty years running machines on this coast means we know how the ground behaves before the bucket goes in.
That matters more here than most places. A footing trench in red clay stands up different than one in coastal sand, the water table sits high on low ground, and a wet-weather dig can cave or fill if you don't plan it. We handle the water, shore or slope where we need to, and dig it safe and to spec. Excavation ties right into our grading and drainage work, so the digging and the shaping get planned as one job instead of two.

A build is only as square and solid as the hole it starts in. We excavate footings and foundations to the lines and depths on your plan, keep the bottom undisturbed and true, and account for the soil we're in so nothing settles later. On coastal sand that wants to slough and inland clay that swells, that isn't a one-size dig, and we adjust the approach to the ground.
We coordinate with your builder and the inspector so the trench is right when the concrete crew shows up, and we backfill and compact properly once the footings are in. Whether it's a house, a shop, a barn, or an addition, the dig is the part nobody sees and everybody depends on. When the same job needs a slab, we can carry it through to concrete flatwork too.
On the Gulf Coast, half of excavation is water management. We set culverts under driveways so a ditch keeps flowing, cut and reshape ditches to daylight, run French drains and drain lines to pull water off low ground, and tie it all into the grade so the property actually sheds. Standing water isn't just a nuisance down here; it undermines drives, floods yards, and rots what it sits against.
Ponds are their own kind of dig and one we enjoy. Whether you want a livestock or irrigation pond, a catch basin to hold storm runoff, or an old pond cleaned out and reshaped, we dig it to hold water and drain right, with banks that won't slide. On this much low, wet ground, a well-placed pond can turn a drainage headache into an asset.
A new water line, power, a septic system, a run out to the shop: it all starts with a clean, straight trench at the right depth. We trench for utilities and septic, keep the grade where the line needs it, and backfill and compact so you're not left with a settling scar across the yard six months later. We locate and work around what's already in the ground so nothing gets cut that shouldn't.
Septic and drainage fields have their own rules in Baldwin and Mobile County, and wet ground with a high water table makes placement matter. We dig to the system design and the county health department's requirements, and we'll flag it early if your soil or water table is going to be a factor, so it gets handled up front instead of after a failed inspection.
From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.
We come out, look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure and no phone-quote guessing.
We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where debris goes, and account for drainage and any lines or wetlands to protect. You know the plan before anything starts moving.
Our own crew runs our own iron — mulchers, excavators, and dozers — and we keep the site clean and keep you posted. Decades of experience means we read the ground and adjust instead of tearing it up.
We walk the finished property with you, haul off or mulch whatever the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and ready for whatever you are building next.
